Customs, NDLEA net cannabis haul from smugglers
In one of the rare instances of inter-agency cooperation, the Ogun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have jointly intercepted 855.1 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa otherwise known as Indian hemp valued at N4.75million.
Customs Area Controller (CAC), NCS, Ogun Area Command, Comptroller Bamidele Akande, said that the Indian hemp consignment, which came in 69 sacks and a number of other compressed packages, was allegedly intercepted along Imeko axis of the state by a combined team of Customs and NDLEA operatives.
He said the cannabis sativa consignment was allegedly being transported in a Mazda 323 car and three motorcycles before it was intercepted and abandoned by the driver who fled into the bush.
“This event is one of the collaborative efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service where government agencies collaborate to meet the demands of duty of another agency in an emergency situation where its personnel are not at the point of any breach of the law,” Akande said.
He assured that the command will not relents in its collaborative efforts with other government agencies to rid the country of unwholesome cross-border trade practices.
